Once again MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is in the news with the death of a Virginia high school student from an infection caused by this bacteria and the release of a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association which documents the alarming increase in the number of these infections. It is now thought that athletic sites such as gyms and locker rooms are increasingly responsible for the alarming spike in the number of cases of MRSA infections so it is absolutely crucial that everyone involved in any type of athletics be educated regarding this “superbug”. Educating everyone involved with your program (staff, including the janitorial staff, athletes and their parents) about MRSA is essential, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s web-site www.cdc.gov is an excellent resource for information regarding community-acquired MRSA. You can also look over our suggested hygiene tips which we provided on this site to encourage you to think about the hygiene protocol of your program. While not in any way medical experts, we are knowledgeable regarding cleaning and disinfecting products, and we are always happy to speak with you regarding any hygiene-related questions you may have.
